June 5 Harvesting, sales at the fish house, and alewives

On Saturday there were fish ladder volunteers at the fish house, selling t-shirts and other fish ladder swag, as well as tickets for a chance on the amazing fish ladder quilt made by Betty Lu Brydges. Sales will not be open today, Sunday.

There are still alewives coming in although the run is definitely winding down. It’s an interesting time of year — not only are fish coming in, but fish that came in early, called run backs, are heading back out to sea. This causes an interesting situation as the fish heading upstream mix with others heading downstream. The mix creates a particular challenge for the counter, who must figure who’s who to get an accurate count!

Harvesting, which was very successful this year, ended on Friday, June 3.
