The fish are back!!!

May 21  The recent cold spell slowed the run considerably. And, last night’s big rain didn’t help. Long time harvester and fish ladder tender extraordinaire, Frankie Waltz, stopped at our house today (with an armload of lilacs, a tradition) and noted that in the past, a slowdown such as the one we were experiencing could lead to an early end to the run that year. Oh no, I thought. We’re definitely not ready for the run to be over for the season. Well, we had no need to worry. Looking at the railroad bridge tonight, we spotted a huge school of alewives. The water was boiling with them! So, there should be plenty of alewives in the fish ladder in the morning…..and in the dippers if you’re looking for bait!!!
