Lots of fish….again! And a note to photographers.

May 24  There are so many fish….again! It’s been a strange spring, from spells of heavy rain and cold nights to more typical spring weather. The alewives have responded in kind, coming in strong after the big rains and high water subsided in early May and falling back for nights of freezing temperatures a week or so later. Well, the tides have turned again….after a slow spell, the fish are back in strong! Let’s hope they’re here like this into well into June! So….lots of fish in the fish ladder and to harvest! It’s a great time to visit the Damariscotta Mills Fish Ladder!!!

Photographers looking for Osprey and eagles are often disappointed as the run progresses. The birds are seen often and in quantity before and during the early part of the run but, as the weeks pass, the birds may find alewives in more diverse locations, not necessarily in front of the fish house competing with hundreds of gulls! The best time to look for Osprey and eagles at this time of year is early morning and evening.
