So many fish!

May 16 The Damariscotta Mills alewife run is in high gear! Lots of fish coming in and passing quickly up the fishladder and into Damariscotta Lake to spawn. Mornings have been a bit slow for a past couple of days due to low tide and early morning cold but the fish soon get moving! It’s a great time to visit….and if you want to watch the harvest, it’s taking place Monday through Friday at 5am and again at 3pm. We consider the harvest, under the auspices of the Towns of Nobleboro and Newcastle, to be an important part of the alewife run. Fresh alewives are the best bait for lobster fishing at this time of year and all proceeds (after paying the harvesters) are reserved for the continuing revitalization of the fish ladder and associated facilities.
