Sad news—the Damariscotta Mills fish ladder community has lost a dear friend

On September 24, the Damariscotta Mills fish ladder community lost a dear friend— Barbara Betts (fondly called Barbie). During the spring, Barbie was one of the first people walking the Route 215 bridge by the fish stream. A fast friend of Mulligan sisters (Sal and MJ), Barbie could be seen at the smokehouse cleaning the gear in readiness for the harvest. Barbie worked at every festival and checked on the fish and the harvest daily during the run.

Come spring (and all the days before and after), Barbie Betts will be sadly missed but dearly remembered as a key member of the Damariscotta Mills community. A bench is being made in her honor by neighbor Leigh Morrill and we’ll celebrate Barbie’s life in the spring during her favorite part of the year—alewife time!
