Rain, fog and alewives
It’s yet another wet morning, thick o’ fog as some might say, and cool out there. As alewives swim up the Damariscotta River, they are drawn to the current, which has an increasing fresh water content as the fish get closer to the fish ladder. Warming water temperatures trigger alewives’ instinct to spawn, especially when those temps get into the mid 50s and higher. Right now, schools of alewives are coming up the river and heading up the fish ladder to spawn at a slow, steady pace. The pace will increase once the sun comes out and temperatures rise. So visit anytime to see alewives…but keep in mind that alewives like sun and warmth as much as we do!
