More fish in the bay
Last evening several schools of alewives were seen (and heard flipping) in Great Salt Bay but there wasn’t even one alewife in the fish ladder this morning. They’re close….and the run should start soon!

The first few alewives were spotted in the lower fish ladder yesterday morning! We call these fish “the scouts”, fish that come in early even though the water is still quite cool. There are also alewives in Great Salt Bay–osprey are circling and diving with some success. As long as we have sunny warming days, […]

Luckily, the pools suffered no damage. Needless to say, we were very grateful that we had not […]
June 3 The 2023 upstream alewife run is slowly coming to an end. At the same time, alewives that have spawned in Damariscotta Lake are heading back downstream—either by way of the Middle Stream or the fish ladder. This morning fish harvester Mark Becker pulled the screens above the dippers, a sure sign that there […]
June 2 As of this morning, Friday, June 2, harvesting alewives at Damariscotta Mills has ended for the year. We thank all the lobstermen and others who purchased fish for your business this year and in the past. We look forward to seeing you again next year!!!
June 1 There are still alewives coming into the fish ladder but the run has definitely slowed down. We saw a small school of alewives in Great Salt Bay earlier today and there were fish headed into the fish ladder and making their way pool to pool to the top…..but definitely there are fewer fish […]
The silent auction winner for the beautiful wall hanging is Margaret Sudrabin from York. Congratulations!
