Wednesday, May 15 Last evening huge schools of alewives filled Great Salt Bay and this morning’s light shows alewives solid from the bay, under the Rt 215 bridge, and well up through the fish ladder. This is the amazing phenomenon that we’ve been waiting for! Harvesting will begin on Friday!
Tuesday, May 14 Another small school of alewives was in this morning, already swimming up pool to pool, at 6am. The big schools will be here soon, keep tuned.
We’ve had many cool (cold) nights this spring and many cool, damp days. These conditions are not conducive to large number of alewives streaming into the fish ladder. Harvesting will begin when the big schools of fish come arrive—-any day now!
