May 1 They’re not here yet…but very soon now!

As the weather warms and with it, water temperatures, the alewives will be triggered to come in and begin their ascent of the fish ladder. The birds are ready for fish—groups of cormorants (called gulps) are organizing in the bay to dive on the fish the minute they arrive. Osprey are in the skies, waiting for alewives but diving on any fish they see to feed their young. And eagles, adults and juveniles alike, are sitting in trees, ready to fly after Osprey after a successful fishing dive. The aerial battles that often ensue are entertaining to watch and can end in eagles catching the fish dropped by the Osprey.
We expect the alewives will be here very soon, perhaps in the next few days. Stay tuned….and you’ll know just a soon as the fish arrive!
