More rain…and alewives

The many rainy days this spring are causing a slow start to this year’s alewife run. Water temperatures haven’t risen enough to stimulate the alewives drive to spawn but, more importantly, the level of Damariscotta Lake is very high. To bring the lake level down, water must be spilled down the Middle Stream and the high flow rates push fish away from the harvesting area and makes accessing the fish ladder entrance more challenging. That said, Sunday is Mother’s Day and the forecast is for a sunny, warm day. Let’s hope the alewives respond and come in strong for all the mothers and their families who visit on Sunday!
