Where did the alewives go?

This is the strangest year for alewives in my 25 years living in Damariscotta Mills and paying close attention to the alewife run! This morning there are some fish by the dippers but essentially none under Rt 215 bridge, by the fish house, or in pools in the lower fish ladder. It’s late in the season but in a normal year small alewives….3 year olds practicing for when they’re older—come in at the end of the run and would be here in early June. It has definitely not been a normal run this year!  Will more alewives come in when the sun comes out and temperatures rise this week? We’ll see…….
