The strangest year for alewives
There were no alewives in yesterday morning, and that followed several days with few if any fish in. The culprit was again the weather: cold, rainy weather. We figured the run might just be over. Oops…not so! There were alewives in this morning. In a typical year, small schools of alewives begin coming up the […]
Fish Art Drawing Today!!!
Did you win one of the magnificent Art Fish?? The drawing is today, June 1, at noon at the fish house! You don’t have to be present to win….but how exciting to be there if you do (or even if you don’t win). Come on down and join the excitement!!!
Where did the alewives go?
This is the strangest year for alewives in my 25 years living in Damariscotta Mills and paying close attention to the alewife run! This morning there are some fish by the dippers but essentially none under Rt 215 bridge, by the fish house, or in pools in the lower fish ladder. It’s late in the […]
Alewives and more alewives
There are still so many alewives passing by the fish house and choosing either the left branch, into the harvesting area, or the right branch, up the fish ladder. If you want to see alewives (and osprey, eagles, herons and other wildlife), it’s a great time to visit the fish ladder!
Finally, so many alewives!
Great Salt Bay was full of alewives last evening—at least 10 “balls” of fish—lining up to pass under the RR trestle and the Rt 215 bridge and up the fish ladder! The sun came out and the fish came!!! Now is a great time to visit the fish ladder! Harvesting will take place mornings at […]
Big doings at the fish ladder today!
It’s Memorial Day weekend and there’s lots going on at the fish house! Volunteers will be there selling fish ladder t-shirts and hats (and other swag), answering questions, and selling ice cream! Yes, famous fisheye pudding ice cream will be for sale (and vanilla and coffee ice cream too). In addition, Jill is offering fish […]
A strange year for alewives
It’s Memorial Day weekend and most years alewives have been moving up the fish ladder for weeks by this time. This year is different, due to cold temperatures and endless rain. Alewives have come in and have been counted entering Damariscotta Lake to spawn….but not many of them. There are schools of alewives in Great […]
It’s a big weekend!!!
It’s a big weekend in Damariscotta Mills! The 5k road race will take place at 9am on Saturday morning. You can still sign up—don’t miss out on the fun! All weekend we’ll have volunteers at the fish house selling fish ladder t-shirts and hats and other swag and providing information about the fish. And, don’t […]
No harvesting today
There will not be harvesting this morning or this afternoon today—Friday, May 23—due to a lack of alewives. Cold temperatures and stormy weather have slowed the run nearly to a stop— look for lots and lots of fish to come in once the weather improves!!! Next harvest — Monday, May 26 at 5am.
