There are alewives in Great Salt Bay–not the big schools yet but the earliest fish, the scouts– and we expect the fish to enter the fish ladder soon. Once they arrive, we typically wait a short while before harvesting the fish as they get fully established in the fish ladder. We expect the harvest to begin around mid-May.
Harvest times/days will be the same as other years–5am and 3pm-4pm weekdays with no harvesting on weekends. New this year–if the tides are best for harvesting during the middle of the day, we’ll take fish then. Lobstermen wanting bait wait in line. We’ll also be selling fish to several co-ops.
Safe practices for Covid-19 will be followed at all times. The harvesting area will be set up for state-mandated social distancing and harvesters only will be allowed by the dippers, new conveyor, check office and hopper. For further information, call Fish Agent Mark Becker at 207-380-7996.
